Australians are well known for their love of barbecues and there are free, or coin-operated, barbecues at many parks, campsites and beaches. The most popular meat is the lamb. The Aussies like their lamb very much; it is part of their national identity. If you are invited for a barbecue then take your own! Usually invitation doesn't include food, so you better ask when you are invited.

Coffee drinking is part of the modern lifestyle in Australia. You can find wide variety of coffee in style and serving. You cannot just ask for "a coffee" as it is usual in Europe. It is like asking for "food" in a restaurant.

One of Australia icon is the Vegemite that is dark brown, salty food paste. The taste is difficult to describe but it is extremely salty and slightly bitter. Many Australians swear that the Vegemite is very nice and tasty. If you aren't Australian you can try it but you won't like it.

Throughout Australia, tipping used not to be customary but is becoming more widespread. In a restaurant a tip of 10% is now normal although some restaurants have started adding a service charge to the bill.
Don't be surprised not finding any alcoholic beverages in shops and stores. You can find beer, wine and spirits only in so called "Liquor shops". You are not allowed to drink any of these in public. There are restaurants with BYO (bring your own) labels where you can take your own drink in paying corkage fees for consuming/opening wines and other drinks. Other restaurants are fully licensed to sell alcohol.
